Moving house is both full of excitement and anticipation, but also tension, particularly during the move itself, whether your moving down the road (from Mill Hill (NW7) to St John's Wood (NW8), say, or further afield, e.g. from London to Hertfordshire, or even abroad.
Here are some moving tips to help your move go easier:
Preparation:
* Keep a bag that looks different from the other bags or drawer for things you'll need as soon as you arrive (bedding, toothbrush, loo roll, etc.) and on the day of the move store this in the front of your removal van or car.
* Before you move, use GUTS to decide what to keep:
- Give it away.
- Use it.
- Throw it away.
- Sell it.
It you're not going to use it in your new house, it's best to chuck it or sell it before you move.
* Start packing items you won't need before your removal, but want to keep (books, winter clothes if it's the summer, etc.) well in advance of your move.
* If moving locally (Mill Hill to St John's Wood example), notify the telephone company in advance, as you may be able to keep the same number. Also notify the post office, bank, insurance companies, etc.
Packing for your move
* Make sure you can easily carry boxes through doors and where possible that they can be carried by one person - it's more efficient to have more small boxes than huge boxes that no one can move.
* Label all the boxes clearly and ask kids to label their own boxes.
* Pick up boxes well in advance from supermarkets, or buy plastic boxes (they're often cheap).
* Empty cupboards into boxes that will then fit back in the cupboard again - this makes everything easy to carry and saves space in the removals van.
The Moving Day
* If you can get someone to look after the kids (particularly younger children) on the day of the move, then do - it'll help keep things calmer. If not advise them that the moving day really isn't the best day to ask lots of questions ("when will you be buying my new bike ...", etc.). Failing this pack an 'entertainment box' for the kids with books, toys, etc. in for when you arrive.
* Allow time to clean before you set off.
* Defrost the freezer at the start of your moving day.
* Give the van driver a mobile number, or arrange for a friend to be able to relay messages so you can keep in touch.
* Allow time for unexpected delays.
